Wmusik: Interview with the band

The Spanish website Wmusik recently got to interview All Time Low when they were in Spain. You can read Oh Calamity's translation of the article below.
Alex Gaskarth, Jack Barakat, Rian Dawson and Zack Merrick have come back to our country four years after launching Dcode Festival. “I think that we have talked about coming back here two or three times a year since then because we love Spain. It’s great to be back” they confess, remembering the party they had the previous night in Barcelona.

Since the last time they were here, no time has passed for All Time Low and their fans. “There are people that we have been seeing at concerts for years. I think that we are very lucky because some of our fans have grown with us” explains Alex Gaskarth, who also admitted loving the younger audience.

The band’s second EP “Put Up Or Shut Up” (2006) came out the year they graduated from high school, right after signing with their current label Hopeless Records. “We were on tour and we had to persuade people to buy our CD” guitarist Jack Barakat remembers, laughing. “Then we started bargaining ‘5 dollars, 3 dollars’… People were complaining that it was too expensive!” But before that, the band was covering the bands they grew up with, like Blink-182 or Green Day. Who knew back then that these four guys would go this far?

Their following album “So Wrong, It’s Right” (2007) helped them become one of the most renowned pop-punk bands of their generation, while the single Dear Maria, Count Me In was so successful it was certified gold (over 500,000 copies sold). And they did it without breaking a sweat. What is their secret? “I think that when you find the right sound, you need to trust yourself and your own opinions” admits Alex.

After years of following their intuitions, they released their sixth album “Future Hearts” in 2015 (which is a lot of records for such a young band). Their frontman made it clear that the title of this latest album expresses their intention of looking at the future: “We are always looking forward to doing new things.”

Alex, Jack, Rian and Zack tried to make us believe that they have matured since their beginnings. “We are now more self-aware: we know who we are and what we want to do with the band.” But the guys in All Time Low cannot fool anyone. Both their on-stage banter and their behaviour off stage tell us otherwise. Go ask Alex, who is still trying to figure out which he liked best between dressing up as a naked Katy Perry in the music video for I Feel Like Dancin’ or French fries in the music video for Something’s Gotta Give.

However, the main goal of the band is to make a name for themselves on the long term in the music industry, like the Beastie Boys and Coldplay did. “I think that it’s great to see a band grow and evolve through their albums. I think we have already started to become one of these bands” claims Gaskarth.

But we are all wondering the same things: Have they really achieved this goal? Are these goals for the future? Will they soon be back in our country? Drummer Rian Dawson has the answer to all these questions and assured us that for now, they are going to keep touring the world: “Within 10 years, we want to release four or five more records. We are not going anywhere.”
